Modernism Week 2017!

Glen Warren

It is that time of year again for our annual trek to the beloved MCM mecca that is Palm Springs, California. This year, we had the unique opportunity to team up with the wonderful folks at Atomic Ranch magazine to give away an entire living room set to a lucky design fan. The package consisted of a Raymore Sofa, Raymore Chair, 48" coffee table, Walnut Pedestal Table, and a vintage lamp (not pictured):

While we were there, we took the Palm Springs Tramway up to Mount San Jacinto State Park that sits atop the San Jacinto mountains which make up the beautiful backdrop to all of those outdoor Palm Springs Instagrams you've been scrolling through. All of the winter storms had covered the top with a decent snow pack and there were some whispy clouds forming and dissolving throughout the day, making for a really unique experience. The park at the top is enormous and almost always green. It provides a wonderful cool break from the 100-degree-plus summer temperatures of the desert and you can hike and camp year-round, and ski and sled in the winter when there is snow. Bring a jacket though. At 8,500', it is always a bit chilly, even in the summer.

The Saturday night we were there, Atomic Ranch invited us to their party at "The Lost Wexler" house. This house was purchased in pretty bad shape and the homeowners wanted to rehab it to what the architect had originally intended it to be. Little did they know when they bought it that it was designed by famed MCM starchitect, Donald Wexler. The property rehabilitation effort was led by Troy Kudlac at KUD Properties, who has started to build new construction, fully-licensed Eichler homes in Palm Springs. KUD Properties unveiled their two newest properties (364 E Sonora Rd, 398 E Sonora Rd) during this year's Modernism Week.

Sara Jane Stone, editor of Atomic Ranch, gave a walk-through of the home during the party on FB Live. You can see it here:

On Sunday, we sold some amazing vintage finds along with some of our own furniture at the official Modernism Week Flea Market.

Overall, it was a very successful Modernism Week. Congratulations to all of our friends and colleagues who showcased their work and shared their wonderful talents during this marvelous week. See you next year!

A Shagadelic Tiki Retreat

As the design-savvy masses descended on the modernist mecca of Palm Springs for the 10th annual and ever-growing Modernism Week, our craftsman were hard at work delivering a showpiece for a very special client. Several months prior, renowned and prolific artist, Shag, stopped by our studio to inquire about getting a custom sofa built for his newly renovated condo in the heart of Palm Springs. We were both excited and humbled that one of our long-time design heroes not only found our company but was compelled enough to visit our warehouse to ask us to collaborate and build his plans for a new centerpiece sectional sofa for the living room of his new condo. Naturally, we said, "Of course!"

Shag’s artwork is ubiquitous and his signature style is unmistakable. Over the span of his career he has created a huge body of work. So much so, that this year he set out to design, build, and open his own retail store on Palm Canyon Drive in the heart of the Design District, just north of downtown. He planned to take the wraps off the store and have his grand opening during Modernism Week. In honor of this new achievement, he was planning to host parties and many guests at his new condo during the week. The only thing he was missing to cap off his remodel was stylish, mid-century seating for the main room. So, after searching online for existing options, he found us and decided to have us build a large custom sectional based loosely on our existing designs. After receiving his design and collaborating on the details, we delivered his custom designed sectional in time for his Modernism Week events.

Some of the design details included a completely custom frame with elevated side arms and an overlapping side table. The custom coffee table actually floats over the cushioned corner sectional piece and can be removed to reveal more seating when necessary (and we’re guessing that was probably necessary.)

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Shag on this one-of-a-kind, multi-functional conversation piece and we wish him all the best on his new store. We’re raising our Mai Tais to new adventures, Cheers!
